There is a tiny soft-serve ice cream shop not that far from my house called “The Freeze”. I believe that once upon a time it used to be a Tastee-Freez. It’s a lot like a Dairy Queen, if you’re not familiar with Tastee-Freez. They serve the soft-serve standards: cones, sundaes, splits, shakes, and most important for the purpose of this post, freezes.
A freeze
is a mixture of soft-serve ice cream and additional ingredients, such as candy or cookie bits.1
The Freeze has dozens of freeze flavors on its menu. When ordering, there’s a tension: do I order one of the flavors I know I like, or do I try something new? A while back, I realized I’d fallen into a rut of ordering a few favorites over and over.2 I hadn’t even tried half the flavors on the menu!3
So I resolved to try all the flavors. In alphabetical order.4 And to write a review for each one, so I wouldn’t have the chance to skip or forget.
Based on some notes that happened to have dates in my starting pocket notebook, this experiment started about June 2023. I finished it on September 22, 2024. Two summers of delicious dairy goodness, immortalized on the internet.
For the sake of completeness, I will note that there are several freezes made with a slice of pie from Kathy’s Pies.5 I have not reviewed those yet (with the exception of the fall special Pumpkin Pie), but am likely to early next season. Whether I post my reviews, who knows?
I will also note that these were all ordered as the small size. For science.
Notes are transcribed from my pocket notebooks (what can I say, it took a while to get through them all, and notebooks fill up!) with minimal editing.
This is, more than most, a completely skippable blog post.
The Freezes
- Banana Split: Somewhat melty or soupy. Probably because of moisture in the mix-ins and the fruit being warmer than the ice cream. Definite fruit flavor. Quite good.
- Brownie: Brownie chunks mixed into vanilla ice cream. The brownie chunks are a bit dry. Better after some melting and soaking. Not bad.
- Butterfinger: Butterfinger candy bars pulverized into chunks. Delicious classic. The crispy/salty interior was a nice texture and flavor complement to the ice cream. The chocolate flavor gets almost entirely lost.
- Cheesecake: Tiny cheesecake bites provided a good texture contrast and flavor. The cheesey-flavor and smooth warmer texture—yum! The graham cracker crust came off a bit as the ice cream melted, giving a nice evolution into a finish with tiny crumbs distributed throughout the ice cream.
- Cheesecake and Cherry: Okay. Whole maraschino cherries—nice! Cheesecake—yum! Together, a nice, inoffensive, middle-of-the-road Freeze.
- Cheesecake and Strawberry: Much different than “and Cherry”.6 Strawberries and cheesecake chunks. Gave a nice overall strawberry flavor and texture contrasts. Chunks were a bit too big at times, but quite nice.
- Chocolate and Cherry: Cherry and hard shell chocolate. Overly sweet and one note. No tartness from the cherries or not enough bitter from the chocolate. Blended thoroughly enough that there wasn’t a palate-cleansing bite of vanilla. A struggle to finish. Like a long cherry cordial—just too much!
- Cookie Dough: Classic chocolate chip cookie dough balls. Good flavor. Not overpowering, plenty of flavor, space for a palate cleanse with straight-up ice cream. Toward the end it got a bit slippery/buttery/lipid-y from the dough, but quite good. Solid.
- Crunch Coat: I did not know what to expect with this one—I’ve never had crunch coat7. Peanut brittle crumbs and sprinkles—tasted a lot like the inside of a Butterfinger. Very crunchy. Good flavor, just a bit more texture contrast than I like. Nicely balanced. Consistent throughout. Not much melt effect.
- Fruity Pebbles: Probably great for fans of the cereal. I can take it or leave it. The bright follow of the cereal flavor disappears unless you get a lot of “pebbles” in a bite. Good and pleasant texture contrast. Mild flavor, so the “fruity” gets lost in the ice cream flavor. Unpleasant cereal residue on my teeth afterwards.
- German Chocolate: Deeelicious! Definite chewing needed, so not a good option if you’re after a smooth mouthfeel. Pecan and coconut, hint of caramel, and chocolate sauce. Not quite the same flavor profile as the cake, but delightful. The chewing doesn’t get painful, stays toothsome throughout (though the coconut stays higher in the cup, mostly), and does not get cloying. Good mix, good solidity.
- Hawaiian: Banana, pineapple, and coconut. Good, a touch sweet. More mix-ins near the bottom of the cup. Feels nice and clean—not difficult to eat or chewy. Not my favorite, but would be nicely refreshing on a hot day.
- Gummi Bear: Exactly what I expected and feared. I wasn’t looking forward to it. Good ice cream. The gummi bears got hard to chew as the freeze went on. Little texture contrast, but hard to chew regardless. I do not expect to order again.8
- Heath: Toffee, chocolate, and ice cream. Simple and good. The chocolate mixes well—a bit of a gooey feel at first that settles in nicely as the candy cools off. More chunks at the bottom of the freeze. Quite good, quite simple. Solid if unspectacular choice—there’s a reason Heath bars, Blizzards, etc, have been around so long.
- Irish Mint: Mint flavor and hard shell chocolate. Pretty tasty, especially early with smaller chocolate chunks (along the lines of chocolate chips). Later on, larger chunks of hard shell get a bit old—and a slightly greasy mouthfeel. Overall quite good even so! (It’s the same concept as chocolate and cherry, but much better flavor contrast.)
- Kit Kat: Exactly that. The cold Kit Kat almost seems more like a Crunch bar. Chocolate and some wafer-y crunch. Not bad. Not great. Recommended for Kit Kat fans (go figure), but if you’re not a huge Kit Kat fan, I’d order something else.
- Lucky Charms: When I ordered this one, the young lady taking my order blurted out “only old men—older guys—order that!” Then she looked a bit embarrassed.9 Lucky Charms cereal blended with vanilla ice cream and I suspect marshmallow fluff. The marshmallow flavor became cloyingly sweet by the end. The first few bites were very good.10
- M&M: Crushed M&Ms. Not bad. As the freeze went on, the M&Ms got harder to chew and needed more deliberate bites. I enjoyed the color trails as the coatings melted.11 The chocolate flavor got muted a bit as the M&Ms froze.
- Nestle Crunch: Delightfully small chunks of Crunch bar in vanilla ice cream. The chocolate preserved the crunchiness throughout. Basic but good. Only complaint: small flecks of chocolate made it hard to find a creamy spoonful. That’s a very minor complaint, though!
- Nerds: The flavor of the Nerds gave a nice tart contrast to the ice cream. The texture was nice early on, but the Nerds were much denser at the bottom of the cup. Early the Nerds chewed in early. Toward the end, chewing was more deliberate, careful to avoid biting too fast (Nerds have a tendency to give way suddenly) or injuring myself by not biting straight enough (and having my jaw slip to the side). A little rough on the tongue. But good.12
- Oreo: Chunks of cookie, little to no “stuff” in vanilla ice cream. More cookie at the bottom. Simple and good. Contrasts in flavor and texture—the dryness of the cookie and slight bitterness go well with the ice cream. Classic for a reason.13
- Oreo Mint: Solid choice! More mint flavor lower in the cup. As with basic Oreo, the Oreos stayed reasonably crunchy—and were roughly evenly distributed. Mint added a nice flavor twist. Nice contrast of texture and flavors. (Note: would be interesting to try with a chocolate ice cream base.)
- Pumpkin Pie: A slice of pumpkin pie in vanilla soft-serve. Nicely mixed. Like most pumpkin pie, a little on the sweet side. Quite tasty. The crust stayed reasonably good when mixed.14
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup: Fine. Light on candy—it was late. Chopped/shredded peanut butter cups in vanilla. Seemed heavier on chocolate shell (meh—the chocolate shell got chewy in annoying ways on big corner chunks) and lighter on peanut butter filling (which is too bad). Will probably try again a different time. Overall okay, but not great.
- Reese’s Pieces: I’m not a huge fan of Reese’s Pieces as a candy. Fans may feel differently about this freeze flavor. The texture contrast was nice at first, and the peanut butter flavor bright against the vanilla ice cream. Soon the peanut butter flavor muted in the cold, and the shell flavor was more noticeable. Fine, but not great.
- Salted Nut Roll: Wow! A very pleasant surprise. The salt (from the peanuts?) enhanced the ice cream flavor nicely. The peanuts I had expected to create an excessively hard texture issue turned out to be easily chewable, even late in the freeze. There was another flavor I didn’t quite follow.15 Really good, first bite to last. Possibly my favorite, likely in the top 3, almost certainly top 5! Highly recommended!
- Smores: Interesting. Graham cracker crumbs distributed heavily through the ice cream. Hints of chocolate flavor, maybe a little marshmallow. Graham cracker was the dominant flavor. Not bad, but not smooth. The texture of the cracker crumbs noticeably softened (for the worse) toward the bottom of the cup. Tasty, but not one I’m likely to reach for because of the texture—and if I were in the mood for that sort of texture, I’d probably do Crunch Coat.
- Snickers: Chunks of Snickers bar in vanilla ice cream. I like Snickers bars—at room temperature. Frozen, the caramel gets too sticky, and the nougat/nuts get crunchy.16 The texture contrast is not great. It’s fine, but difficult to eat; the cold mutes the flavor; not one I’m likely to order again. (That said, attempting to synthesize or imitate Snickers with caramel sauce, nuts, chocolate, etc., could be delicious!)
- Turtle: Pecan chunks, chocolate sauce, and a hint of caramel. Rather good! Got a bit sweet toward the bottom of the cup as the chocolate and other mix-ins got more dense. Quite nice. The chocolate flavor was not over-the-top sweet, which helped keep the flavors balanced.17
- Whoppers: Crushed Whoppers in vanilla soft serve. Exactly as you might expect. Not bad if you like Whoppers, and probably not even bad if you don’t like Whoppers. Downsides are limited: the chocolate sticks to teeth a bit as it cools, and the sharp chunks slightly abrade the gums by my molars (kind of like Cap’n Crunch cereal). Solid, unspectacular, and quite acceptable.
Conclusions
Close to 30 flavors, two-thousand-odd words of review, and I don’t even know how many calories later, I’ll keep my conclusions short. For now.
Crunch Coat and Salted Nut Roll were both unexpectedly delicious.
I should probably re-try Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup to give it a fair shake.
There are several flavors that, on a lazy summer day, would be fun to try with chocolate ice cream.
I noticed in my reviews that I started noticing things about my freezes as I went: how thoroughly they were mixed, the mix-in density as I got further into the cup, changes in flavor and mouthfeel overall. From this I could draw conclusions about expertise and connoisseurship developing from noticing and recording observations, but I won’t. Instead, I’ll draw the conclusion that ice cream tastes good, and is generally enjoyable.
I recommend The Freeze in Marion, Iowa. But visit at a slow time. It gets busy on summer nights. But traffic and parking around The Freeze is a whole separate post.18
Now that I’m done ordering freezes in alphabetical order, what’s next? Sundaes? Shakes? Parfaits?
- Much like a Dairy Queen Blizzard. [↩]
- Not that there’s anything wrong with that! [↩]
- There is something wrong with that! [↩]
- Much like Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged, but with ice cream instead of insults. [↩]
- Note that this is “Kathy’s Pies”. Not “Kathy Spies”. …is what secret agent Kathy wants you to think! [↩]
- I recall being surprised by the contrast between “and Cherry” and “and Strawberry”. I didn’t explicitly note that at the time. [↩]
- It’s a crunchy coating (surprise!) that’s normally put on ice cream cones, from what I’ve gathered. [↩]
- In fairness, I will note that there is a member of my family that regularly orders gummi bear sundaes (which are basically the same thing as the gummi bear freeze) and rather enjoys them. In less fairness, this member of my family is clearly crazy. [↩]
- I laughed. I think she was surprised and trying to say that I don’t fully match the “old man” profile. [↩]
- I tried this one out of order, after Butterfinger. It was listed as a special, and I wanted to try it before it went away. It’s now been listed as special for two summers. [↩]
- “Melts in your mouth, not in your hands.” But also, oozes color just a bit in your melting ice cream. [↩]
- This was the freeze that opened the 2024 “The Freeze” season. It was out of order (it should have come before both Nestle Crunch and Oreo) because toward the end of 2003 they were out of Nerds. It makes sense that they wouldn’t order an industrial-size box of Nerds for the slowest couple weeks of the season, when I expect it’s far from the most popular flavor. [↩]
- This was the freeze that closed out the 2023 “The Freeze” season for me. [↩]
- I tried this out of order, after finishing the standard list. It is a special flavor that only shows up in the late fall. [↩]
- I assume it was marshmallow fluff to simulate the nougat, but could have been something else. It was subtle. [↩]
- Fun fact: I once lost a tooth while eating a Snickers bar. At first I thought the tooth was a peanut. When I couldn’t bite into it I realized it probably was not a candy bar ingredient. [↩]
- Due to a literal bookkeeping error (I didn’t keep my notebook on me), I ordered the Turtle freeze twice in a row. I couldn’t remember if I’d ordered it yet. That is far from the worst mistake I’ve made in my life. It did trip up my sprint to the freeze flavor finish line, though. [↩]
- One I’ll probably never write! [↩]
